When is the right time of year to trim trees

The best time to prune most trees is during the dormant season, from late winter to early spring, because it minimizes stress and the risk of pests and diseases. However, prune trees that bloom in early spring (like lilacs) immediately after they finish flowering. For fruit trees, pruning time can depend on the variety and your goals, with some pruned in late winter and others after fruiting in summer.

Dormant season pruning (late winter to early spring)

Why: The tree is dormant, which minimizes stress and makes it easier to see the structure without leaves. Cuts have time to heal before the growing season, and it reduces the risk of pests and diseases.

Who: Most deciduous trees, including late-blooming trees that flower in summer or fall (like crape myrtles).

What: Prune for shape, to remove dead or crossing branches, and to encourage healthy growth.

After flowering pruning (spring to summer)

Why: The tree has already set its buds on last year's growth for the current year's flowers. Pruning now won't remove the blooms.

Who: Trees and shrubs that bloom in early spring, such as lilacs, flowering cherries, and crabapples.

What: Prune after the flowers have faded to maintain the desired shape.
